The tangerine cultural salon\u00a0par excellence\u00a0was founded in 1949 <\/b><\/strong>at 54 Boulevard Pasteur, in the heart of the city: Librairie des Colonnes.\u00a0For over 60 years, the\u00a0bookstore\u00a0has emerged as a place of culture, open and free, after a dark period,\u00a0a<\/strong>t the end of 2010<\/strong>, it regained its full splendor and has become a major player in the city.<\/p>\n

It was\u00a0<\/strong>a place of meeting and knowledge<\/strong>, frequented by big names in literature: Samuel Beckett, Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote,\u00a0Jean Genet, Paul Morand … Gallimard made\u00a0it one of his counters, the\u00a0Bowles their mailbox, Choukri his reading room, Tahar Ben Jelloun his library, and for all Tangerines\u00a0and visitors passing by, it\u00a0became\u00a0a refuge of the spirit.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Whatever the news of the world, the Library of Columns has always been able to maintain a space of expression<\/strong>\u00a0and <\/strong>freedom<\/strong>, through\u00a0the consultation of the knowledge and its dissemination.<\/p>\n

At the dawn of this century, however, the Columns seemed destined to share\u00a0the fate of many other mythical libraries.\u00a0It was Pierre Berg\u00e9,\u00a0that\u00a0bet on this humanist project in order to give it back its nobility.\u00a0Its reopening in late 2010<\/strong>, precedes the inauguration of the Berber Museum of Marrakech, which is, together with the Majorelle Garden,\u00a0the tribute of Pierre Berg\u00e9 to his second homeland, Morocco.<\/p>\n

Managed\u00a0by Simon-Pierre Hamelin, founder of the magazine Nejma, the bookstore offered\u00a0a collection of literature and essays in <\/strong>4<\/strong>\u00a0languages<\/strong>\u00a0\u200b\u200b(Arabic, French, English, Spanish).<\/p>\n

From the outside the bookcase is presented in a different way than before: two beautiful columns lacquered red at the entrance invite readers to enter, along with the written in three languages \u200b\u200b(\u00a0bookshop<\/i><\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0librairie<\/i><\/em>\u00a0,\u00a0maktaba<\/i><\/em>\u00a0) affixed on the windows.\u00a0Inside, in an environment warmed by soft lighting and wood panels that give it a slightly vintage look, there are books of non-fiction, fiction, photography, for children, in Arabic, French, English, Spanish and even in Italian.<\/p>\n

A large number of cultural events<\/strong>\u00a0are organized, at the bookstore or in other exceptional places of the city.\u00a0The Librairie des Colonnes is yearning for weaving the\u00a0literary and cultural links between all the shores of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

Editions in Librairie des Colonnes<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since 2011, the Librairie des Colonnes is also a publishing house<\/strong>.\u00a0Just like the city,\u00a0faithful to its history, it is naturally\u00a0displaying\u00a0eclecticism and multilingualism<\/b><\/strong>.\u00a0The quality and nature of the published texts is\u00a0in line with the commitments made by the library since its origins.<\/p>\n

\"Open<\/p>\n

The magazine Nejma was born in the summer of 2006, from a desire to\u00a0gather and<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0highlight all artistic expressions<\/b><\/strong>\u00a0existing in Tangier and more widely in Morocco and the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

It published its\u00a0special issues devoted to Jean Genet, Paul Bowles and Mohamed Choukri, and its\u00a0catalog gradually consists\u00a0of general literature in Arabic, French or English, monographs and books of art and photographs concerning the Arab world and the Mediterranean area.<\/p>\n

\"Open<\/p>\n

Throughout the issues, this unique journal has managed to bring together the most diverse genres and to coexist all languages, with no other concern than that of offering a real space for literary expression, beyond any frontier.<\/p>\n

The first issue, assembled in a kitchen, wanted to show that there is no need for significant means<\/strong>\u00a0to provide a space of artistic expression.\u00a0The next proved that it was justified to publish\u00a0in different languages \u200b\u200band forms<\/strong>, confirmed authors alongside perfect anonymous persons.<\/p>\n

Themes<\/strong>\u00a0quickly imposed in so many variations on the border and monographs dedicated to Paul Bowles, Jean Genet or Mohamed Choukri, helped to highlight the literary territories of Morocco.<\/p>\n

All languages \u200b\u200band forms of expression coexist\u00a0in order to breathe new life into Moroccan literary expression.\u00a0And it responds to a need,\u00a0a compelling need to restore Tangier’s centrality\u00a0within the arts and culture, echoing contemporary creation.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, the Librairie des Colonnes is not just a bookstore. It is a living museum, a still-vital cultural salon, and the enduring guardian of the literary spirit that makes Tangier a city of legends.<\/em><\/p>\n
