Local flavors and cuisine say a lot about a people’s culture, and so the food we eat during a trip is a factor that greatly influences the memories we take away from that country. Let yourself be carried away by the variety of vegetarian food in Morocco!

Morocco is indeed a paradise for vegetarians, offering a rich and diverse array of flavors and dishes that are not only delicious but also deeply rooted in the country’s culture and traditions. As you explore the vibrant streets and markets of Morocco, you’ll find a wide variety of vegetarian-friendly options that are sure to tantalize your taste buds and create lasting memories.

One of the best things about Moroccan cuisine is its use of fresh, seasonal ingredients. From vibrant vegetables to fragrant herbs and spices, the country’s culinary offerings are full of flavor and variety. Vegetarians can indulge in a range of dishes, including couscous, tagines, salads, and more, all of which are made with love and care.

For breakfast**, Moroccans often enjoy a hearty meal that includes a variety of vegetarian options. Bread, often served with olive oil and zaalouk (a spicy tomato and eggplant dip), is a staple of the Moroccan breakfast table. Eggs can be cooked in a variety of ways, including scrambled, fried, or poached, and are often served with vegetables or cheese. Fruits, such as oranges, grapes, and figs, are also popular breakfast choices, and can be found in abundance at local markets.

In addition to traditional breakfast options, Morocco’s convenience stores, or “magasins,” offer a wide range of vegetarian-friendly snacks and beverages. From fresh juices made with local fruits to almonds, dates, and a variety of teas, these stores are a great place to grab a quick and healthy meal on the go.

When it comes to dining out, Morocco is full of vegetarian-friendly restaurants that offer a range of dishes to suit all tastes. From cozy cafes serving traditional Moroccan cuisine to trendy restaurants offering a modern twist on traditional dishes, there’s something for everyone. Many restaurants also offer vegetarian-specific menus, making it easy for vegetarians to find something to suit their dietary needs.

Tagine and couscous** are typical Moroccan dishes and both can be served with just vegetables. There is a tagine made with beef, chicken, lamb, but also with vegetables and dates (a very popular food in Morocco). Also try the Bissara soup, made with broad beans and deliciously seasoned with local spices, which is completely vegetarian.

As the Moroccan people are in contact with tourists and foreigners on a daily basis, the notion of vegetarianism is not strange to them and the most modern restaurants in the larger cities usually have several vegetarian options.

Although the concept of vegan is not common in Morocco (alternatives to milk, cheese, and eggs), Moroccans are extremely friendly and hospitable, always making an effort to ensure that any visitor eats the best possible food. So don’t feel shy about informing restaurant and hotel staff of your dietary restrictions. When planning your trip with us, we will always ensure that all accommodations are aware of your needs.

In Fes, visit the Dar Tajine restaurant, which, although it serves meat, is owned by an owner who specializes in vegetarian dishes. They serve local fruits and biscuits, all made with fresh produce, and you can also try the almond, vegetable, and cinnamon “pastilla” (a typical Fes dish).

In Marrakesh, we find Earth Café , the first vegan and vegetarian restaurant that opened in Marrakesh in 2007. It is owned by a Moroccan man who has lived in the USA and Australia. It serves excellent and tasty meals, with a menu that changes every day, including fresh goat cheese dishes, cakes, rice with lentils, and very good desserts.

Earth Café is located in the medina of Marrakesh, in an alley perpendicular to the Riad Zitoun Lkedim. It is a restaurant that is easily accessible from Jemaa el-Fnaa Square, about a 3-minute walk down the street from the Riad Zitoun Kedim.

Certainly, you will find vegetarian options at most restaurants, so there’s no need to worry. To ensure a pleasant dining experience, it’s recommended to check on platforms like Tripadvisor before visiting any restaurant to see if they offer vegetarian dishes and read reviews from other customers about their vegetarian options. Overall, you will find Vegetarian options in most restaurants. Here is a fantastic destination for vegetarians who are looking to explore a rich and diverse culinary landscape.
